Grade Level Art Summary

Kindergarten:  Students will learn about the elements of art with units on line, shape, color, texture, rhythm and balance. Many projects will be based on the work of a famous artist.

First Grade:  First graders will learn about the elements and principals of art with units on line & shape, color & value, texture, balance & emphasis, and rhythm & movement. They will work in many different mediums and study the work of famous artist throughout history.

Second Grade:  Second graders will work on developing their artistic perceptions through responding to different artworks & identifying elements and principals in artwork. They will have units on line & shape, space & form, color, balance, emphasis, & texture, rhythm & movement, & pattern.

Third Grade:  Third graders will study the art form various cultures around the world. They will focus on the principals of design with units on color  texture, emphasis & contrast, rhythm and movement, unity, variety, & balance, & form. Students in third grade will develop their critical thinking skills through responding to artwork of different cultures and time periods.

Fourth Grade:  Fourth graders will focus on art history and culture with units on the Renaissance, Asia, Africa, Latin America, US & Missouri Artists, & Modern Art. Students will develop their critical thinking skills by comparing and contrasting the artwork based on the cultures and art movements they study.

Fifth Grade:  Fifth graders will focus on an in depth exploration of a wide range of art mediums. They will have units in drawing, paint, printmaking, sculpture, & ceramics. Students will develop their critical thinking and art vocabulary by participating in teacher led critiques of various projects that encourage positive feedback and meaningful suggestions about how students can work to improve their art skills.
